RISE stands for Reading Involves Shared Experiences.
The purpose of this project is to provide parents, early intervention professionals, professionals in the education field, or anyone else with an interest in deaf children tools to promote language acquisition and early literacy skills through exposure to eBooks and YouTube© videos. By engaging children in this type of learning and shared reading, parents (and other adults) are able to strengthen the parent-child bond which impacts many aspects of a child’s life. These bimodal-bilingual stories are designed to delight both deaf children and adults who share the books with them, whether those adults be comfortable signers or not.
RISE is a product of collaboration between Gallaudet University and Swarthmore College since 2013 under the guidance of Prof. Gene Mirus and Prof. Donna Jo Napoli. All products listed under tab "eBook Stories" feature a native deaf signer in various sign languages. All were created by teams of students from both institutions unless otherwise indicated. RISE ebooks are produced entirely by unpaid volunteers. RISE is grateful for the continuing support of Gallaudet University, Swarthmore College, and the Dolfinger-McMahon Foundation for transportation support between the two campuses.
